Being a woman in America today brings about a unique set of issues, even more so as a new mother. Things like compassion fatigue, burnout, and overall stress and anxiety, just to name a few. To get the most out of therapy one has to able to take into account the bigger systemic issues at play.

— Janette Macias, Art Therapist in Hollywood, FL

My approach is built on a foundation of feminist, anti-oppression values. I believe therapy is ineffective if the greater social context a person lives in is not examined critically; most of the time, doing so is empowering for all genders.

Here in the South, there is a level of sexism in the very air we breathe, the way we were coached to behave, and in the way others were trained to view us. It can be a lot to navigate what it means to be a woman - in your family, in the workplace, in a relationship, as a parent, as a partner, in social circles. If things just feel really hard and you can't put your finger on why, we can explore that! There are lots of ways to take charge of yourself more effectively.

— Larissa Smith, Licensed Clinical Social Worker

Presenting Fem can be intensely frustrating and confusing. People tell you when, how, and even if you should have a family. You work twice as hard to get half as far. Your body is a topic of legislation. The way you present your woman-ness, the size of your body, the clothes you wear, your sexuality, the way you speak- is under constant critique. There are so many "rules" for how to live and they're all in conflict and changing constantly. Let's talk about how YOU want to live your life!

Sometimes, I like to say, "I survived being a teenage girl in America," usually with a humorous tone. The reality is that a majority of women, including cis- and trans-gendered as well as those identifying as non-binary and queer and who may present as femme, face harm in some form from all directions on a daily basis. I believe we need to support each other, not tear each other down, so my practice is about educating and advocating whenever possible.
