About My Clients

I tend to be the person colleagues send folks with identities they see as "complex." I am one of those "complex" folks, so to me, gender creative, neuro-creative clients, with various relationship structures, histories, and sexual needs and interests don't feel complex at all. They feel like my people. Let's get to the work of discovering your deepest self, healing wounds and traumas, and helping you thrive and meet your goals, not those of society or mainstream culture.

My Background and Approach

I consider myself first an foremost a Liberation Psychologist. I'm not here to help you fit in to society's existing structures or identity boxes. I'm here to explore your most authentic self, identify your own goals, and empower you to meet them. I believe strongly that our early histories and families of origin continue to impact us, but societal structures and political realities do as well. I utilize a parts framework to understand how your inner world works and help you, as your most grounded, empowered, and adult self, heal younger parts who may have experienced trauma and struggle to feel safe. I believe true healing has to be experienced. While insights and analysis are important, working with the body on an energetic, emotional level is required, especially for trauma healing. I am very integrational and try to tailor treatment as much as possible to the individual. I like to involve clients directly in deciding how treatment should proceed.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

As an activist, transgender advocate, and anti-racist, I always work to understand clients in terms of how they are impacted by the larger environment. For so many years, transgender people were seen as mentally ill due to the impacts of minority stress. It is critical to free folks from the sense of responsibility, whether conscious or unconscious, for the impacts of minority stress. Having worked closely with the transgender community, of which I am also a part, I believe strongly that affirming folks in the therapy room is not enough. I see activism and advocacy as a required part of working for my clients' healing and liberation. I believe therapy should not only improve people's lives individually, but create ripples that reverberate throughout society as folks become empowered and challenge internalized biases and societal programming. This is why I spend much of my time on supervision, training and consulting in a variety of settings about sex and gender diversity.
